FOR MEN WHO KNOW BEST
The sport of kings and the well turned out

In the Sport of Kings, the Stan James Guineas Festival may have a somewhat less than royal ring to it to outsiders but in fact Stan James is something of a king in the world of betting – and also as sponsor of this classic race meeting.

racingpic.jpgRacing has traditionally provided a lucrative setting for tailors.  Royal enclosure protocol,  a mixture of wealthy sponsors and classy country participants, plus punters dressing up for a special day out ensure that this is one sport that supports an up-market dress code. There may be rough edges around the betting fraternity but, in the main, the racing crowd stick to a smart code, and tailors report increased orders for morning coats from a new young generation of racing enthusiasts.

The Two Thousand Guineas Stakes was first run in 1809 and remains one of the most prestigious of  British races.  For 3-year old colts (and some fillies), run over a mile at Newmarket, it has been won by such famous horses as Nijinsky and Dancing Brave, and its original prize of 2,000 guineas now amounts to around £110,000.

The next Festival takes place from May 5-6 and for those wanting the best vantage point, there’s a 20per cent discount for booking online for the Premier Enclosure, £28.80 instead of £36 on the door, or for the Grandstand and Paddock it is £17.60 online, £22 on the door. Superior snooker tables

A VERY superior make of pool and billiardtable.jpgsnooker table, much favoured by European interior designers, has become available in the UK for the first time.
Ursus Biliardi is a Rolls Royce of these tables for private homes as well as commercial and hotel premises, and the North Lincolnshire-based company of Elston & Hopkin has become the UK distributor.

Made by specialist cabinet makers in Tuscany, they are individually designed, some exact replicas of 19th century tables, using rare and precious woods. Similar tables would have been seen in aristocratic houses and castle in the 18th century, and Ursus Biliardi have been faithfully reproducing them for over 60 years. Better styling for on the piste

skiwear.jpg
DESPITE a dearth of snow in certain resorts, dedicated skiers have managed to find the right slopes.  But are they finding the right skiwear?  Paul Goldsteain, chairman of ski brand Nevica, is of the opinion that those on the piste have been decidedly drab in recent years and has launched a new range of skiwear to transform them.

E+O is the new brand, aimed at the young who want to look stylish as well as suitably skiful on skis.  It is for serious skiers, so incorporates some technical innovations to aid functionality, and covers jackets, pants, salopettes,waistcoats and sweaters, as well as accessories. Prices range from £300 to £450.

:: What's In Savile Row Style ? ::

:: Golf that isn't cricket::

A ROBOT is replacing the knowledgeable old caddie of golfing lore.  This is in the shape of an ever more advanced technical range-finder, which provides the sort of details on the course ahead that some may say takes the skill or fun out of the game.

SkyGolf has added new versions of its SkyCaddie SG2, which offer a simplified model for occasional golfers and more features for avid and travelling golfers.

“Centuries ago,” said Richard Edmonson of SkyGolf, (the game dates back to around mid-15th century), “golfers would rely on the expertise of a knowledgeable caddie to navigate their way around the hazards on a golf course.  The SkyCaddie will tell golfers how far they need to hit the ball safely to fairways and greens – as though a personal caddie were beside them.”

Well, it hardly seems cricket, but Edmonson maintains that by using one of these devices, players are playing better and faster and having more fun. Up to 2005, rangefinders were banned by the U.S. Golf Association but are now allowed in competitions under local tournament rule. And to speed their acceptance in the UK and Europe, SkyGolf has just opened a new distribution base in  Oxfordshire.
Its only a matter of time, it would seem, before they will be on all courses. The days of the caddie are numbered.
