FOR MEN WHO KNOW BEST |
• Buying into the new Steam Age
|
|
|
|
The swing back to trains (see Travel) may not quite take in Steam but a splendid new locomotive is being built. |
A new steam locomotive? Enthusiasts still beguiled by the age of steam are no doubt ecstatic over the news that the first mainline steam locomotive in 46 years is being built in Britain, at the Darlington Locomotive Works.
Due to be completed by the end of the year, a further £115,000 needs to be donated to the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, to bring the total cost of building the 'Tornado' to £2.56m. The rest has already been raised or pledged, showing the extent of interest in the project.
One of the ways in which funds have been raised is by supporters sponsoring particular components, either on their own behalf or as a gift for others. It may be too late for Valentine's Day but there are still plenty of nuts and bolts on offer as potential gift nuggets for train fans.
"The recipient will receive a drawing of the component sponsored and a certificate," Mark Allatt, chairman of the Trust tells us, "recognising the sponsorship and with the dedication worded however the giver wishes."
There are plenty of parts still available for sponsorship, ranging in price from £25 up to £25,000. For dedicated train buffs, the prospect of standing on the platform and being able to claim a piece of this classic steam engine must be the best present that a reasonable amount of money can buy. So to claim your boiler stay (£25), piston and rod (£1,900) or exhaust steam injector (£12,000) or any of the other thingamajigs contact enquiries@a1steam.com or see www.a1steam.com

• Sleek black tech gadgets
|
To the mind-boggling variety of personal tech gadgets already available, a constant stream of others is added that keep making the last ‘latest’ decidedly de trop.
So perhaps it is fortunate that Sony dub their latest ‘a gadget of the future’ rather than the must-have for now. This compact, light PC, the VAIO UX1, fits into your hands but is packed full of features that mean you can watch movies, listen to music and view photos wherever you are.
Sleek of design and in the required all-black finish, it offers keyboard or stylus or touch-screen operation and gives full PC capability for those on the go, with two cameras and 32 GB of flash memory. In shops now at £1,999.
FOR those determined on a new MP3 player, there’s the just-launched MAX-IVY from Maxfield. Within jet-black casing, it offers either 1GB, 2GB or 4GB internal memory (storing 16, 32 or 64 hours of music respectively) and contains a versatile player that supports MP3, WMA-DRM 10, and OGG format files, making it fully approved by Napster, Yahoo, MSN Music and Musicload for use with their content services.
Just 8.55mm thick and weighing in at only 42 gms, it has a welter of other cutting edge features too numerous to mention here. Price £95.99. Stockits from www.maxfield.de

The British work the longest hours in Europe, with those City boys in particular earning bonuses by dedicated ambition that curtails normal socialising. Spectacular boozing and spending sprees are hardly conducive to meeting a nice girl to take home to mother, so a gift membership to a ‘meeting’ service could be just the ticket to true romance.
‘Only Lunch’ has been established for over 10 years. Proceedings start with a session with their ‘Date Doctor’, and from his assessment, a young lady is selected from their books, a suitable restaurant booked, for lunch or dinner, and the resulting tete-a-tete provides a convivial environment for evaluating the potential. There are various membership option, so check www.onlylunch.co.uk.
