• Art showtime in Springtime
|
|
TENSIONS between town and country, as evident, the organisers maintain, in some of our finest landscape paintings, are the basis for an exhibition to take place at a the Compton Verney gallery in March.
Gainsborough, Constable, Turner, Lowry, Spencer and Hockney are among 40 artists represented in the show, at this stunning gallery in the Warwickshire countryside. Covering from the 18th century to the present day, 'Opulence and Anxiety' aims to explore influences on the painters - but it should be easy to simply enjoy these works without analysing them too deeply. For info go to www.comptonverney.org.uk
Also in March is the Affordable Art Fair in London's Battersea Park. This brings together work from some 125 galleries and you can buy original art here from prices starting at £50, going up to £3,000. One of the highlights is the photography section, including such fine art photos as this one. William Ramsay, founder of the Fair, says that "Photography is rocketing up the Richter scale of collectability" , providing accessible entry into the art world for many. www.affordableartfair.com
This is a 'Girl from the Omo Tribe' by John Kennedy, in an edition of 25, price £650.

An• Exploring the Antarctic in South Kenout art
|
For those who feel an urge to go exploring, to trek in the wilderness and to test their endurance, it might be wise first to go to the Natural History Museum in May to an unusual event there that may satisfy the desire.
This is Ice Station Antartica, an exhibition that aims to create a series of mini-environments for visitors to explore. Antartica is the coldest, windiest and most remote place on earth, so trying to replicate the conditions in darkest South Kensington is no mean feat. Yet by working with British Antartic Survey, the organisers have come up with a show where visitors may experience some of the tough conditions, from coping with sub-zero temperatures and riding a skidoo to collecting ice cores.
It is likely to be one of those events that has families queuing round the block, a sure hit with adventurous kids. As one of the highlights of international Polar Year, it is to tour Europe and beyond after its stint at the Natural History Museum, so see it here first. From May 26 to April 6. For the full programme of exciting events coming up at this always-interesting museum, go to www.nhm.ac.uk

DD Home Entertainment can be relied upon to release interesting DVDs and the latest two are particularly good.
When Kevin Costner starred in the film Dances with Wolves he became fascinated by the history and culture of the Native Americans and went on to produce and host a television series devoted to their history, not shown in the UK. This is just available as a 3 disc set, titled 500 Nations, and takes in the Mayans and Aztecs as well as the Cherokee, Sioux and other familiar Indian names.
Available now in good DVD retailers, priced £29.99 or through DD Home Entertainment on www.ddhe.co.uk
Some remarkable film footage, not seen before, of the Royal Navy during the Second World War includes private 'home movie' film from crew members.
Taken against the rules, these films include rare glimpses of a numbers of battleships, carriers, cruisers and a mine-laying submarine, and range over pre-war exercises in Malta, through warships of the China Station, scenes of the Norwegian campaign, the sinking of the carrier Eagle, the shelling of Madagascar and other events.
Available from March 19, in retailers, or direct from www.ddhe.co.uk

FOR dedicated followers of Savile Row, the book that James Sherwood wrote to coincide with The London Cut event in Florence is a gem.
It provides not only the history but the zest of the Row, documenting the leading names and individual influences, with illustrations showing Row customers from Dickens and Churchill through the likes of Gable, Sinatra, Bowie, Lennnon, Jagger and Madonna.
That Sherwood managed to get this written, whilst also organising the presentation of the tailors' show in Florence, is a testament to his stamina as well as his talent.
Distributed in the UK and Europe by Windsor Books, price 20Euros, in the US by Rizzoli International Publications. |
