SHORT NEWS

•ON the red carpet at the London premiere of 'Skyfall', Ralph Fiennes stepped out in a fine dinner suit by Timothy Everest - as he wore to the BAFTA 's earlier this year. This slim single breasted style, with shawl collar, is made in Scabal's super 100 barathea.

•THE largest salmon ever caught in Britain was caught by a woman and a carved wooden model of it goes on sale at the BonhamsSporting Sale on November 7. In the 1920s, Georgina Ballantine caught the monster 64-pounder on the River Tay, and her ghillie father took a plaster cast of it, which formed the basis of this wooden block model.

•PREPARATIONS are already well underway for next year's Golden Shears Competition. Savile Row apprentices are working on entries for the prestigious awards, which will be presented on March 18th next year.

•THE oldest ever Islay single malt whisky has been released by Bowmore. This 54 year old whisky was distilled in 1957 and bottled in 2011. Just 12 bottles are in existence and it is expected to be much sought-after by collectors. Two bottles went to auction in New York at the end of October but failed to reach their reserve price of $160,000.

•TEXTILE Forum, the small but influential textile showcase staged in London, celebrated its 10th birthday this October. It provides a happy hunting ground for designers and manufacturers, and although largely concerned with womenswear, also features some fine men's cloths - notably from Holland & Sherry and Johnstons of Elgin.
