FOR MEN WHO KNOW BEST

SUN SPECS GO BESPOKE

For any man who finds it difficult to decide what to wear, what to put with what, what colours to team, the latest development from Adidas will not be a welcome one.

This new eyewear collection allows over 1,030,656 combinations from which to choose. Yes, over a million,  by virtue of specs that may be taken to bits and reassembled in all manner of permutations specsadidasman.jpgand colourways.

The aptly named ‘Customize’ collection of  sunglasses has temples, frames, bars, lenses and more, which detach and are designed to mix ‘n match with others in the collection. The website on www.adidas.com provides hours of harmless fun in trying out these effects and seeing the result on yourself in the virtual mirror provided.

Launched at a jolly shindig in the Vanilla club, in London's ragtrade area, Adidas see the concept as ‘allowing people to express their own personal style’. It means you may coordinate your glasses to every outfit.

This may be taking the modern mania for choice to a new level but these are quality specs, made by top eyewear name Silhouette of Austria.  Available online at www.sportsshadesonline.com, price £74.99

specspowell.jpgSHADES OF SOHO
Here we have tailor Mark Powell showing off a pair of frames from Eye Respect, a company that combines sharp London design with Italian make.

They have teamed up with their near neighbour to create a collection inspired by Soho characters, as "think pimps, sex-shop owners and street traders, making a buck with attitude", they say. Not sure that Mark's illustrious customers will embrace such specspowell.jpgconnotations, but Eye Respect say consumer response has been fantastic.

Powell is stocking the collection, a fashion-right sideline that other tailors might adopt. This chunky pair are called Marshall after the street where he resides, and priced at £195

specsguess.jpgBOLD AND RETRO
Bigger frames, as above and below, are back in vogue for this summer, retro designs complementing retro hairstyles, as in the slicked back James Dean/ 50s look shown on this model.

The shades come from the Guess collection, prices from £65, on sale in their shops and online at www.guess.eu. They have also included quite a few aviator styles for this season.

Retro inspiration again evident in the compact folding glasses below, available from the online eyewear specialists, myoptique.com. The site carries a range of famous brands, including Prada.

These Prada 14OS frames fold smoothly for the pocket, made in a light havana acetate. They may be ordered with prescription or non-prescription lenses. Price £285.specspradafold.jpgspecsprada.jpg

GOLDEN EYES
In a box of their own, Bentley sunglasses may be a must-have accessory for Bentley owners but could also provide would-be owners with that first step towards acquiring the motor. They specsbentley.jpgare the ultimate luxury eyewear, with 18 carat gold frames plus platinum and silver palladium.

Named after Bentley's Mulsanne marque, the glasses are handmade in Germany, each pair with its own engraved number and featuring the Bentley 'B' motif.

Strictly limited to 100 pieces per colour variation, they are hand polished to perfection and promise a rosy if shaded view of the world. Marketed in the UK from the Eyewear Centre and available through all Bentley dealerships, they are priced from £6,400 up to £26,000 for the platinum version, with optional extras extra. bentleyeyewear.co.uk

:: PRE-SHADES ::

TIME was, before the advent of sunglasses, men wore hats to shade their eyes from the sun.

These jaunty new caps from tailor John Pearse provide a sunny alternative to shades if worn tipped at the right angle - or an eye-catching addition, as well as a fashionable aid for those going thin on top. In cotton, they sell at £65 from his Soho shop. www.johnpearse.co.uk
