TAKE A TAILOR-MADE JET FLIGHT

Sardines and cattle come to mind in relation to  standard air travel but the actual flight is only part, often a minor one, of the whole miserable process that we endure now, whatever class you are travelling.

There’s the trek to the airport, the queues and scrabble of check-in and the indignities of disrobing, going shoeless and being frisked and prodded with a metal detector by some impertinent jetcharter.jpgofficial, before factoring in the frequent delays, the departure lounges designed to bring on severe ennui, and interminable walks to Gates that seem as far away as the far away place for which you set out many hours before. Combined with concern about the environment, it is small wonder then that there is a resurgence in rail and sea travel.  But these are options only for those who have time, of course (the sleek Eurostar and near Europe apart). Private aircraft are the answer for others.

Buying your own aircraft is a tad expensive but the private air charter business is booming.

Its advantages are obvious:  No more concerns about whether your hand baggage is within the strict parameters laid down  by the airline – on your own charter aircraft there are  minimal limitations on hand or hold luggage. You can take off more or less when you want to, arriving just twenty minutes before departure at whichever airport is the most convenient, having been picked up by limousine, with no queuing, the sort of food you want on board, and room to stretch your legs and even swing the cat.

Naturally, this convenience and comfort is rather more expensive than a scheduled
flight ticket but more and more are finding it a worth while indulgence.

Hugh Courteney of International Air Charter, below, tells us that the price works out  on average at about 25 per cent more per person than scheduled First Class, depending hughcharter.jpgupon numbers.“There is enormous availability of private jets around the world,” he tells us, “that would be standing idle if private jet charter companies were not making use of them.

He maintains that a really good private charter company can arguably offer you an even better service than you’d enjoy if you actually owned your own jet. After all, your own jet may not always be precisely where you want it to be, and in any case it is a very expensive luxury

The jets used may be owned by small airlines, by corporations, governments or private individuals. Flights are arranged by experienced staff, and you get to fly when, where from, and where to at whatever best suits your convenience. Private jet charter is indeed a tailor-made flying service.

As an example, a Citation II Jet from London to Cologne, for up to 8 passengers on a day return would cost around £5,500. AS TAILOR-MADE charter flights increase (see left) to provide an alternative to the horrors of scheduled flights, so greater use of smaller, regional airports is seen as a means of avoiding the horrors of Heathrow and other crowded major ports.

Air Arann, a fast-growing little airline, maintains that these regional airports often provide as good facilities as the big ones and with far less stress, easier access and, with shorter taxiing distances, reduce fuel burn and carbon footprints.

Peter Philips, head of marketing at Cardiff International Airport, reports that regional airports are growing faster than their London counterparts.

“They now handle 42 per cent of all air traffic in the UK. Destination is the key driver - you can fly direct to over 60 direct destinations, and over 400 worldwide connecting flights from Cardiff International, and by continuing to offer new routes we can cut out hundreds of thousands of unnecessary journeys along the busy M4 corridor.”
