A WATCH FOR ALL TIMES

'OH, goodie, just what I needed – a watch that will tell me the altitude, the temperature, my direction, provides a stopwatch, three alarms, and a calendar to 2089.'  If this latest time marvel is anything like so many other technological advances of our experience then it will take until 2089 to read the instruction manual.

The Suunto X-Lander all black limited edition watch has just come onto the market at £229.99, a bargain it would appear for the amount of wizardry it offers.  It is designed to be a watch for adventurers, produced by the adventure specialists OutdoorGB.

“The X-Lander is an accurate altimeter, a complete barometer, a precise electronic compass and a multi-functional sports watch in one elegant package,” says  Edward Giles of OutdoorGB. “This is one of the most complete adventurer’s watches available, and the limited edition black version looks super-chilled as well.”
Designed for the jungle and the mountain top, it should work just as well in the office.

Moving up a strata, we have another all-singing and dancing timepiece in the Oris Williams TT3 Titan Chronograph.  In addition to telling the time, this has a tachymeter bezel for measuring speed, a visible high-mech movement with Oris rotor, is water resistant to 100m and is made from titanium with a dial of carbon.

Oris is prominent in the Formula One world and has been official watch partner to the Williams F1 team for three years, creating a range of special watches in the process.
This latest model from this Swiss company comes in a limited edition of 3,000 and  is priced at £1200.

If in doubt give a bottle

BEFORE the annual nightmare of Christmas gift searching for men reaches fever pitch, let us put in a timely reminder that a really good bottle of something goes down well with most gentlemen of our acquaintance.

Far safer than trying to come up with something weird and wonderful, a fine bottle of wine or spirit is generally a very welcome stocking filler.  Here are two of the better options:

From the House of Bollinger comes the eagerly anticipated R.D. (Recently Disgorged) 1996 vintage.  This year gave one of the greatest harvests since 1928 and this is only the 20th R.D. since Bollinger first produced one in 1952.  A real treat for champagne lovers, it is available from selected specialist wine, as from early October, at £95 per bottle.  Best served at 10 ° C.

For whisky lovers, The Macallan single malt remains a classic choice.  The Fine Oak version, in 10, 15, 21 and 30 year old vintages, is matured in bourbon and sherry oak casks, while the Sherry Oak is exclusively matured in sherry casks for 10, 18, 25 and 30 ages.  Then there is the Fine and Rare collection, featuring vintage malts from 1926 to 1975, each vintage representing the finest from that year.  But all are The Macallan and any one of them will be appreciated by a man who knows his whisky.  Prices from around £25 per bottle up to £3450 and beyond for the rare vintages.

::A gentleman's service::

TIME was when every gentleman had his own personal Jeeves.  Now, such gentlemen’s gentlemen are rarer than hen's teeth, despite the hectic pace of modern life making such a helpmate ever more desirable.  So a new service may well provide a really useful gift for the man who doesn’t quite have everything.

‘Personal to You’ is the latest idea from Lilli Home Harmony, a company that provides various useful services. As examples of what this latest one is capable of covering, it lists: meeting a client flying in to London to attend a black tie evening, providing his dj, dress shirt and cufflinks, and a present for his partner; sourcing gold medal winning wines from worldwide vineyards; arranging a romantic picnic with live music; and cataloguing a CD collection by genre and artist.

It is like having a personal secretary at the end of the line, without the hassle.  Price of this telephonic Jeeves starts from £100 but for the full, 27/7 service there is the Platinum level.  Price here starts at £50,000, but is based upon the individual client’s needs, taking into account whether overseas travel will be required and other variables.

A Tiffany key ring, suitably gift-boxed, provides the lucky recipient with the telephone number that will connect him.  Go to www.lillihomeharmony.co.uk
