WHAT makes a Savile Row tailor different from any other? Training. What all the tailors listed here have in common are the long years of training that they have put in and that is what makes them master craftsmen. Some may be less practical than others, some may concentrate upon fittings or cutting or may manage everything. But they have all trained to create clothing individually measured, fitted, made and finished for the individual customers. And they are backed by the traditions and ambience that has been built up in the Savile Row area over a couple of centuries.

That's what makes them special. We carry interviews with some of the tailors and will be adding more.  Click on a name to see who is explaining how they started in Savile Row.

This is the oldest name in Savile Row, dating back to 1744, and run by the oldest tailor, Ron Pescod, now into his ninth decade - but still with a loyal band of customers, some of whom have brought along their young sons, who have also become devotees. No website here - nothing so new-fangled.

Director Anthony Hewitt has more or less retired now and leaves the running of the business to Ravi Tailor. The firm is famous for its lightweight tropical wear suits.

Legendary name and equally legendary in terms of reclusiveness, this house has recently had to move out of its long term premises in the Row around the corner into New Burlington Street.

One of the newest names and run by one of the youngest tailors, Richard Anderson, who established this firm in 2001 with Brian Lishak - one of the longest serving tailors. He is celebrating 50 years in the business this  year. They have rapidly established themselves as exponents of the classic, soft Savile Row style.

Across Piccadilly from the Savile Row environs but in the classic tailoring mould, run by Ken Austin. It also offers a wide selection of insignia buttons as well as other accessories.

The limited space of this establishment (as for many in the Row ) belies the size of its tailoring fraternity. Johns & Pegg, Wells and Tobias are three old firms who now use the facilities here, along with Adeney & Boutroy, with Alan Bennett the genial director of Davies who plays host.

Showing that new generations are continuing the Row's traditions, William Skinner runs this house, having taken over from his father Michael. The firm has a strong connection with the military.

Sadly, Keith Fallen died last year but his partner Peter Harvey continues the business, now travelling to the U.S. as well as in other directions.

The parent company that owns Airey & Wheeler. They have recently sublet the front of house, where they had generous shop space, but are still to be found at the back, with Ravi Tailor in charge

This revered name has gone through a number of changes in recent years but now seems to have settled down to concentrate upon its slim, soft image.

Poole was the first tailoring house in Savile Row and celebrates its 200th birthday in 2006. The family connection goes on, with young Simon Cundey joining his father Angus in management.

Run by Andrew Ramroop, who is one of the tailors who firmly believes in globalisation. He travels constantly to visit clients all over the world and was the lone representative of the Row at the World Tailors' Congress this year

John Davis had to give up premises due to the redevelopment that also made Anderson & Sheppard move but now happily runs his business largely online, visiting clients, and using the fitting facilities at this address when necessary
